1 Timothy 4

1 Timothy 4 addresses the presence of false teachings, emphasizing the importance of sound doctrine and training in godliness. Paul encourages Timothy to set an example in his life and ministry, focusing on the essentials of faith, love, and purity. The chapter underscores the value of godliness for both the present life and the life to come.

  1. Warning Against False Teachings (1 Timothy 4:1-5): Paul warns Timothy about the emergence of false teachings in the latter times. These teachings involve deceitful spirits and teachings of demons that prohibit certain foods and advocate for celibacy. Paul affirms that everything God created is good and can be received with thanksgiving if it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
  2. Training in Godliness (1 Timothy 4:6-10): Paul instructs Timothy to be a good servant of Christ, nourished on the words of the faith and the good doctrine he has followed. He contrasts physical training, which has limited value, with the value of training in godliness. Paul affirms that godliness is beneficial for this life and the life to come. He encourages Timothy to toil and strive because he has set his hope on the living God.
  3. Set an Example (1 Timothy 4:11-16): Paul instructs Timothy to set an example for the believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. He encourages him to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, exhortation, and teaching. Timothy is urged not to neglect the gift he received through prophecy and the laying on of hands. By practicing and persisting in these things, he will save both himself and his hearers.
