John 17

This chapter captures a deeply intimate moment as Jesus prays to the Father on behalf of himself, his disciples, and all future believers. The themes of glory, unity, protection, and sanctification are central in this powerful prayer, providing insight into Jesus' heart and his mission.

  1. The High Priestly Prayer (John 17:1-5): Jesus begins a profound prayer often referred to as the High Priestly Prayer. He expresses his desire to glorify the Father and for the Father to glorify him, acknowledging his authority over all flesh and the gift of eternal life.
  2. Jesus Prays for His Disciples (John 17:6-19): Jesus prays specifically for his disciples, acknowledging that they belong to God. He prays for their protection from the evil one, for their unity, and that they may be sanctified by the truth of God's Word.
  3. Jesus Prays for All Believers (John 17:20-26): Expanding his prayer, Jesus prays for all who will believe in him through the message of the disciples. He desires unity among believers, emphasizing that the world may know God sent him through the love and unity displayed by his followers.
