Summary
In Mark 5, the power and authority of Jesus are prominently displayed through his ability to heal diseases, cast out demons, and even raise the dead. These miraculous events emphasize Jesus' compassion, the importance of faith, and his dominion over both the natural and supernatural realms.
- Healing of the Demon-Possessed Man (Mark 5:1-20): Jesus arrives in the region of the Gerasenes and encounters a man possessed by a legion of demons. Despite the man's violent and self-destructive behavior, Jesus commands the demons to leave him. The demons enter a herd of pigs, which then rush into the sea and drown. The healed man, now in his right mind, wants to follow Jesus, but Jesus instructs him to return home and share what God has done for him.
- Healing of a Woman with a Hemorrhage (Mark 5:21-34): Jairus, a synagogue leader, approaches Jesus, pleading for him to heal his dying daughter. On the way to Jairus' house, a woman who has been suffering from a chronic hemorrhage for twelve years reaches out and touches Jesus' garment, believing she will be healed. Jesus commends her faith and heals her.
- Raising Jairus' Daughter (Mark 5:35-43): As they continue to Jairus' house, messengers arrive with the news that the girl has died. Jesus encourages Jairus not to fear and proceeds to the house with Peter, James, John, and the girl's parents. Jesus raises the girl from the dead, instructing them to give her something to eat.
