Philippians 3

Summary

 

Philippians 3 emphasizes the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ rather than relying on human achievements. Paul shares his personal testimony, stressing the surpassing value of knowing Christ and the importance of pressing toward the goal of Christian maturity and heavenly citizenship.

 

1. Warning Against False Confidence (Philippians 3:1-3): Paul begins by warning the Philippians to beware of those who place confidence in external, ritualistic observances. True believers, he asserts, are those who worship in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
2. Paul's Personal Example (Philippians 3:4-11): Paul shares his own background, boasting in his Jewish heritage, strict adherence to the law, and zeal for persecuting Christians. However, he considers all of his former accomplishments as loss compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ. He expresses his desire to be found in Christ, not having a righteousness of his own, but the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ.
3. Pressing Toward the Goal (Philippians 3:12-16): Paul acknowledges that he has not yet attained perfection but strives to press on toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ. He encourages the Philippians to imitate him and focus on the goal, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.
4. Citizenship in Heaven (Philippians 3:17-21): Paul contrasts those who live as enemies of the cross, focused on earthly things, with believers whose citizenship is in heaven. He eagerly awaits the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform their lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.
